ACV on the rocks and I'm ready for some SHOTS!

I had to go there.  Partially because you guys have been flooding my inbox with apple cider vinegar questions and partially because I hold a soft place in my heart for the song my title pokes fun of.  Yes it was played at my wedding.  The same wedding where we cleaned out the bar in record time and also shut down the reception venue AND the beach bar we held our after-party at. [what? don't all weddings have after parties?]  I had *quite* the wild streak.  Past tense.  These days the simple act of wine tasting is enough to send my liver packing [and my inhibitions out the window].  Growing up is terrifying.  Let's never do it.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way with, I'd love to address a few of the questions that you crazy kids have sent my way.  Though I have my a BS in Dietetics and a fierce love of anything and everything holistic, I'm still not an expert or a doctor - so consult your health professional if you're considering making any major changes to your diet + lifestyle.  It's the smart thing to do =)

Anywho! I'm going to do this Q+A style and keep it short and sweet -- we can keep the discussion going in the comments section of this post if you'd like since I'd LOVE to know what your relationship with ACV is and hear all about your routine as well!  So feel free to share it!

What is apple cider vinegar?  What kind do you use?
Essentially it's exactly what it sounds like!  It's vinegar made from apple cider or pressed apples [with all the good parts included!].  I use is Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar since it's raw, fermented, organic, unpasteurized, and just plain awesome.  They don't know I'm writing this post, I just really like their products.  Their liquid aminos are a fabulous gluten-free alternative to soy sauce!

Umm.... why are you drinking it!?
A few friends [LauraAmanda + Calee] were raving about ACV on twitter so I decided to try it for myself.  I'm a huge fan of Kombucha, which is also acidic + fermented, and was curious if I'd like this too!  Long story short - I loved it!  See below for the "cocktail" I drink daily.  I've done a little bit of research on possible benefits, and they include everything from alleviating muscle soreness, to promoting digestion and balance, to clearing up troublesome skin.  You can read a bit more here.

That explains why you tried it, but why are you still drinking it?
I'd love to say the potential slew of health benefits are what keep me coming back for more, but I'm terribly shallow at times.  The main reason I hit the ACV bottle every morning is because my skin hasn't been this clear all year.  The time I clock in the gym usually leaves me with breakouts around my hairline and arms as well as a few stragglers on my forehead, chin, and nose.  Fun right?  Ugh!  Since starting my day with a little ACV-Kombucha "cocktail," my skin has been much clearer.  I also occasionally pour it over my hair in the shower to remove product build-up.

Do you suggest it?
Technically I can't, because I'm not your doctor =)  But I do love it so!  Like everything, moderation is key and going overboard [like having a ACV chugging contest with your bestie] could do more harm than good.

ACV Kombucha Mocktail
1/2 glass ice water
1/2 glass kombucha [trilogy is my favorite!]
1 shot [1oz] of apple cider vinegar
tips + tricks
1. Always shake the apple cider vinegar beforehand.
2. Never shake the kombucha... unless you want to paint the walls of your kitchen sticky.
3. Start with 1/2 a shot [1/2oz] of vinegar + add a lil more as you acclimate to the taste.
4. From what I've read/researched, fermented beverages do their best work on an empty stomach.  For this reason I usually have it first thing in the morning on non-gym days or post workout on gym days.  If I'm too hungry to wait, I dig in alongside the drink.  The stomach wants what the stomach wants =)

Cheers!

  1. Mocktails in the morning! I am so addicted to my morning ACV Amino "mocktail," but I SWEAR to you that I am going to kombucha it up. I'm going to lave this post open on my laptop so I don't forget. And I also need to remember not to shake the kombucha... it's just so tempting with the stuff settled on the bottom.

Uhhhh... I totally thought all weddings has after parties...

  2. Oh I have made the mistake of shaking the Kombucha...not even shaking just turning the bottle to get the goodness that has settled all incorporated... that was an embarrassing explosion in the Whole Foods parking lot lol

  4. Thanks, Jenn for this info. I've been hearing about it but wasn't sure what to do with it. Question, though...I can't find Kombucha in my area-don't know why. I plan to drive up to Whole Foods, but it's about an hour away. In the meantime, any suggestions on what to include instead of the "K"?? I appreciate it!!

I am a big fan of ACV, mostly because I have terrible digestion issues and it helps SO much!! It also really cuts back on the bloating so if I know I will be in a bikini, you can bet I will be downing ACV several times per day leading up to it, lol!!

I enjoy the taste so I usually just add it to some water but every now and again, I will add a bit of honey to sweeten it up.

  9. me and kombucha don't get along, but this has peaked my interest and I may give it another shot!

  11. ACV and kombucha together?! Why haven't I thought of that! I drink both on a daily basis, but I've never thought of combining them. Gonna have to give it a shot :D

  12. i am a HUGE fan of acv!! i just discovered some flavored ones from braggs. i already tried the grape-acai, which i really liked, but it was missing that acv ZING that i really love! i'm going to try some of the other flavors this week. mmmm.

  13. I drink ACV most mornings too. I have also been guilty of #2, I was led astray and that is all I will say about that....also I think it would be fab with Kombucha errryyy day but I think my home would quickly be in forclosure at almost $4 a pop!

  14. I've never had kombucha. What is it exactly? I see it everywhere. I don't think I can even pronounce it.

  15. I've been seeing ACV popping up everywhere lately...I bought a bottle, but I haven't tried it yet. Thinking I'll have to break it out soon!

  16. I love apple cider vinegar! I drink a cocktail of 8 oz warm water, half a lemon and a shot of acv first thing in the morning it's fantastic :). BUT, I'm also slightly obsessed with kombucha, so after seeing all your posts on instagram I tried the cocktail. AMAZING! Instead of ice water, I mix in sparkling water and it's fabulous.

ps. Have you ever tried making your own kombucha? I really want to, but for some reason it completely freaks me out. Weird? Probably!!

  22. Hmmmm. Maybe this is something I will try! I love kombucha and use braggs apple cider in dressings, etc. and, yes, I totally shake kombucha every single time....I never learn...

  23. I'll admit that I absent-mindedly shook my kombucha a few weeks ago while leaving the store - it is a disaster after that! :)

  24. I love both...so I smell an addiction on the horizon. Trilogy is YUM! The other day I had hibiscus flavor. Too nom!

  25. Ooh.. I hadn't thought of putting ACV in kombucha... yum! I love Trilogy- but really, there are few brands of Synergy that I don't love. I think Strawberry Serenity is my favorite. Or the green one. Or Cosmic Cranberry. See? Too many good choices.
Have you had coconut vinegar? The word on the street (or um, on their site) is that it's got more benefits than ACV. I've been mixing it with water and a little stevia. It's not bad!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Tooooooooooooooooooooootally guilty of shaking the Kombucha!!! Yeah...it wasn't pretty. I also wasn't a huge fan. Maybe I didn't have the right flavor?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh wow! Great info... I need to look into adding it into my daily regiment.

    ReplyDelete
  28. THIS is the best thing EVERRRRRRRRR. :) love you. love this idea.

  29. I love ACV! My favorite is adding it to water with a splash of lemon, lime, or orange!

  30. NOOOO I have to cancel my weekend plans! I had a great party lined up that revolved around an ACV bong, shotgunning bottles of ACV and of course ACV shots. Apparently that's excessive...
haha thanks for the info! Love the kombucha addition!

  31. I just started using Bragg's ACV too! I heard to make sure to get the kind that says "With The Mother" (which is what your picture shows!), but I have no clue what that means. Do you know?? I love their liquid aminos too! I think all of their products are superbbbb:)

  32. I had to laugh, I brew my own Kombucha and opened a bottle from the fridge one day to drink and it exploded into a "mentos into coke bottle" volcano all over the ceiling of my kitchen... Good to know I am not the only person this has happened to. (BTW, buying a gallon of sweet organic tea already prepared + bottle of synergy + ferment 1 week uncovered but protected with a coffee filter to keep out bugs, then fermeted 2-3 days covered with a few bits of candied ginger = homemade gallon of GT Synergy for like 2.00. And no matter what ANYONE says, it is darn near impossible to mess up brewing your own kombucha, you don't need to buy a mushroom, just dump a full bottle of GTs into your own tea and let 'er rip!)

  33. If you are making the trip, consider buying a bottle to begin brewing your own. The only tools I use are 1/2 gallon mason jar, coffee filter, rubber band, premade black tea from any grocer that is full sugar, and a bottle of GTs. After about a week if the temp is ~74 and above, you should have tangy tea. Winter takes a little longer. Be sure to wash with hot soapy water any instrument you will introduce to tea (spoons to stir, straws to sip tea to determine if it is ready for the second brew/ferment to add fizz, etc for aseptic technique" Then you swap out with fresh tea as your batch matures. A second brewing (transfer to mason jar/old GTs Kombucha bottle/etc) with ~2oz of fruit juice produces the fizz. I juice my own so it is fully raw, but you can use grape juice, candied ginger, etc. 48-72 hours is all you need for second brew, then put in fridge until ready to drink. I can't drink it fast enough, and it is so much cheaper than buying a 4.00 bottle of GTs. Tastes comparable if not better.

  36. Just tried this, but with frozen berries to sweeten it up. I accidentally bought a carbonated green tea kombucha though.. I don't enjoy carbonation so it's difficult to get down! Berries help. Dealing with a lot of health problems lately... so hoping this will help the healing process. :)

  37. Ok, so I was just reading your post about your pantry makeover (awesome, btw) and I was wondering - are these the ridiculously expensive drinks that you may or may not have bought so many of?! If so, are they worth the money to drink every single day? I too have skin issues and I'm dying to try out this regimen to see if it helps me out. Thanks! Love your site! =D

  38. Hey Sarah! I buy a few at a time and drink maybe 1/3-1/2 of one a day as needed. Usually when I'm breaking lut or having GI issues or über stressed... but once I run out it takes me a while to restock b/c of the cost!! It costs as much as wine does but is still too steep for me so I think I'm going to try my hand at brewing my own next! Ive heard it's so so easy and affordable too!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I bet it would pair really well with cranberry juce or apple juice too! Def skip the carbonation if you're not a fan of bubbles! Thanks Michelle!! =)

  40. awesome Julie!!! Thanks for all the tips! It's on my list of things to try this fall!!! <3

  41. Bahahaha! I can totally picture this! My husband shook a bottle before handing it to me one time and it exploded in the middle of his helicopter hangar like 5 seconds before he was set to deploy. Obviously it was an epic, bubbly, messy send-off! =)

  42. "With the Mother" refers to the raw fermented healthy bacteria strands that are left in the drink. At least from what I remember! lol! It's the one I buy! Their products rock!

  43. I'm giggling my face off right now. You are a party animal! I'll hold you hair back from all the festivities if need be ;)

  44. The Synergy Strawberry Serenity is a great starter flavor -- it tastes like strawberry soda with a pinch of ginger! =) Very fizzy too!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I adore the strawberry and cranberry flavors too! OMG! They're addictive!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ohmygosh hibiscus!? I have to find that flavor! Sounds awesome!

  47. I'm going to start making my own this fall!!! We should try it together!! =) I'm so so glad you liked the drink! I'm going to have to pick up some fizzy water now =)

  49. Split it into thirds! 3 servings for 4 dollars... its like really cheap wine!!! =) I go days without it upon running out b/c of the broke factor though -- I can only justify so many before I feel like a fiend ;) haha

  50. yay!!! Let me know what you think gorgeous! xo
