WIAW #76 -- Food *AND* Fitness!

Happy Independence Day AND What I Ate Wednesday!
You guys better be prepared to party twice as hard =)

WIAW What I Ate Wednesday 76

[breakfast] black coffee and a jumbo whole grain blueberry-raspberry muffin  [snacka banana en route to the gym and a pile of watermelon post-workout  [luncha savory stuffed sweet potato  [snacktuna salad snack plate: veggie-loaded tuna salad with pickles, sprouts, cucumbers, and tortilla chips  [dinnertwo slices of mexican pizza lasagna

side note:  I don't recommend eating bananas while driving... truckers honk.

--what i've been drinking--
Cucumber Water

In addition to my black coffee face-plant in the morning [and afternoon pick-me-up] I've been CHUGGING cucumber water by the glass.  By the very large mason jar to be accurate.  It's ridiculously refreshing and, if you're a fan of cukes, you should totally follow suit!

Magic Hat Elder Betty - a bird in the hand is normally a chicken

I also fell in love with a new beer this week.  Magic Hat's Summer Elder Betty is a refreshing wheat beer naturally flavored with elderberry.  I love the fortune cookie-esque notes on their bottle caps!

and since this month's focus is fitness...
USMC Group Fitness Classes Cherry Point

I'm a little bit of a group fitness junkie.  And by a little bit, I mean I'm a raging group fitness junkie.  I'm empathetic by nature, so when I surround myself with supportive, energetic, and motivated people, it rubs off effortlessly.  Luckily I have some of the best workout buddies and fitness instructors on the planet!  All courtesy of the USMC =)  Love it!

Here are a few of my favorite fitness classes to take...
Though I have to rotate which ones I attend weekly so I have time to do things like write and EAT!

spinning
power pump
zumba + zumba toning + zumba sento

H.I.T.T [High Intensity Tactical Training]

Do you ever take group fitness classes?

  1. Did you really get honked at???

You need to add some mint to that cucumber water, girl. Minty fresh. ;)

  2. Hahah! I actually don't like eating bananas in public because they are obscene!

Good reminder about the cucumber water--must do that soon!

  3. Great idea with the cucumber water :) I have heard of it before, but haven't tried it! Since you are loving it I might just have to give it a go ;) ....

  4. Ha!  I had a similar experience eating a lollipop while driving.  From Talla-trashy, actually.

Happy 4th of July WIAW!!  XOXOX

  5. I am just starting to like group fitness classes.  I grew up doing my mom's fitness DVDs (think TaeBo lol) and group classes are basically that..but like you said with motivating people around you!  I am actually planning on BodyPump in the morning...have you tried it??

Love the new theme this month!!  Hope you have a wonderful 4th friend! :-)

  6. I've just started getting back in to classes! Loving spinning at the moment, don't think I've ever sweat so much! Happy 4th of July! :)

  7. I've never been honked or jeered at for eating a banana!  But I live in Canada, so someone probably apologized at me for watching.

  8. Jenn!! So Glad you added fitness to July! Especially since I started walking on Sunday!  2 miles a day so far.  I'm pretty excited about it!  AND it fit right in to WIAW!!

  9. Oh my gosh, does that beer not rock?! I just tried it a few weeks ago when I took it upon myself to sample all of Kroger's Summer Ale section...thank God for the make-your-own six packs! ;)

I go back and forth on group fitness classes...I think it's because I get bored. I only really do the occasional Bodypump and I try to make it in to as many yoga classes as I can...gotta work on that flexibility. I guess if I had the kahunas to try another spin class, I could do that, but geez Louise, the last time I swear I couldn't walk for like THREE days! Lol

Also, I'm convinced that you need to come over and cook me dinner. Please. Thank you. And I will repay you with pancakes and carrot cake parfaits! ;)

    Lovvvvvvvvvvve youuuuuuuuuuuu!

  10. I was thinking...wait why is she posting WIAW today...and then I realized it is indeed Wednesday.  Feels like a Saturday because of the holiday! :-)  I love cucumber water, too.  Totally makes me feel like I'm at the spa.

I usually stay away from group classes... they intimidate me SO much!

Happy 4th of July! Have a lovely day, chica!

Your food always looks great, Jenn, and I love cucumber water! Your fitness class looks fun, I miss my Jazzercise in Hawaii. We moved to NY and the closest one is over an hour's drive away! It's a lot more fun working out with people but I have my DVDs and am reading fitness blogs to stay motivated...it's kinda working, but nothing beats a real, live instructor. Happy WIAW!

  17. I've got really into fitness classes recently! The ones I go to each week are Body Pump, spinning and Boot Camp (which is a mix of weights, spinning, step etc) - I find them so much more motivating than just going to the gym on my own.

Thanks for hosting as always, love WIAW! :)

  18. I think I'm doing a loaded savoury sweet potato for dinner TONIGHT! Yours always look so scrumptious :-) I LOVE group fitness classes because you can just blend in and push yourself with the energy from others however I just started Jamie Eason's LiveFit this week which forces me to do a lot of weights for the first 4 weeks. I've really surprised myself because I am totally enjoying it! I don't think I have the most perfect form and I'm the only girlie in amongst a bunch of college-aged guys, but I just crank the tunes and pretend I'm all alone! Happy WIAW!

  19. Happy 4th July to you! I like group fitness too - Zumba is a big one - but I can't ONLY do group fitness...something about having something scheduled every day stresses me out, so I like a few days when I can do my own thing at my own time! Love your eats - cucumber water sounds so refreshing!

  20. happy fourth! cucumber water sounds pretty delicious. I've never tried it. hope you have a great holiday. I will be enjoying it no matter what since I get an extra day off.

  21. I love group fitness and individual. I'm signed up to take water zumba at our pool and I'm super psyched!
Loving the muffins. I think they just get to another level when you sprinkle oats on top :)

  22. Im not a huge group class individual...but i do love group yoga classes!  They seem to help me stay on form better.  xoxo Did u ever post about the box we mailed to the soldiers?  My life has been so nuts - I might have missed it!

i am obsessed with bodypump and turbo kickboxing. i took hustle once and left it at that because that class helped me realize that i am meant to dance in the dark where no one can see my horrific moves.

question about the cuc water - how many slices do you use per mason jar and do you reuse the slices?

  24. I've never really been a fan of the group fitness classes, I'm too self conscious and then waste the whole class paranoid about how I look, sad but true.  I DO enjoy them though if I attend with a few friends and we can all poke fun/laugh at one another.

Hope you are having a great July 4!!  :)

  30. Your savory stuffed sweet potatoes make me swoon! And cucumber water makes me so happy. I first discovered it at Pinkberry, and now occasionally make it at home. Or I just go to Pinkberry. Because cucumber water coupled with froyo is so much better than cucumber water alone. ;)

    HUGS!!

p.s. are you coming to DC, missy?!

  32. Cuke water and froyo sounds like a match made in heaven =)

DC trip keeps getting cancelled! ahhhh I dont know what is wrong with my friends and fam but they keep bailing on me -- I'm pushing for a trip in the fall with the hubs though, he's uber reliable!

  34. Promise I will!!!!! I'm whipping up one more batch to make sure its perrrrrrrrfect before I posti t! <3 I'm kind of OCD when it comes to recipes =) Expect it super soon!

  35. I was like that at first, and refused to try new ones until I had friends to go with -- but now I've perfected the act of being a hot mess and laughing at myself regardless =) It's quite liberating

  36. I add about 5-8 slices to a 32oz mason jar of iced filtered water and then eat the slices at the end =) There's no wrong way to make it though. Sometimes I re-use the slices and sometimes I chow down as I drink - either way its deeeeelish!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Soon! Promise!!! I just want to make it one more time to make sure its absolutely perfect! =)

  42. If it's anything like powerpump at my gym then yes! =) I'm a class addict!

  43. Yes!!! I live in a military town with lots of young hyperactive males and a lack of females so.... I get honked at A LOT!

  44. To be honest, except for yoga and rock climbing type class, i've never taken any other group fitness classes!  I'm curious though and I'd like to see the people I can meet there and perhaps how much EXTRA motivation I can feel  in those settings.  Although, surprisingly I workout very well when I'm by myself.  And cucumber water sounds great!! I can only imagine how beneficial it would be for hydration, skin, digestion, etc. :D

Some benefits to working out at home: 1) your clothes don't have to match, 2) you won't have to pack water/snacks or drive, 3) you'll get done faster and can have a shower and post-workout meal right after!

To make it routine, just assign the days and times to exercise. My afternoons are getting busier so I started exercising in the morning. I scheduled 8:30-10:15 as my "exercise time" and gave myself leeway for a shower and a little dilly-dallying! If you find a blog that can give you helpful tips on starting an exercise routine, that'll help keep you on track (check out http://inspiredrd.com/category/fitness-challenges.)

    Hope this helps! :)

  46. Thanks love!!!!! I'm going to attempt to keep myself on sched ;)

  47. Those sliced jalapenos look so yummy!  I love spicy!!
I take spin class occasionally, but I find that I either love or hate the class, depending on the instructor.  I usually work out alone, but I do enjoy taking classes too!
