August #WIAW Theme: Summer Staples!

Peas and Crayons

Oh yes, I went there.

When I came up with this theme I had summer salads on the brain.  Of course I'm not talking about "oh i'm on a diet so I need to eat plain boring salads all day every day" Pshh!  I'm talking about some SERIOUS summer salads!  Colorful veggies, nutrient dense toppings, and dressings that don't just sit on top but instead ENHANCE the salad in all its veggie glory.

But this month's theme isn't simply about salads.  It's about any summer staple you would love to gush about.  You can spend an entire day waxing poetic about your favorite summer produce or simply sneak in a few summer-centric recipes along with your food diary-esque What I Ate Wednesday post.  All is fair in love and veggies!

And just because our july Food, Fun, and FITNESS extravaganza is over doesn't mean you get to sit on your butt all august long -- Let's keep posting our fitness tips, goals, workouts, and motivation!  I promise to reward you with oodles of mind-blowingly yummy recipes if you keep the fitness streak alive.  Deal?  I'll even throw in some chocolate -- but you have to earn it!

Here are a few ideas for extras you can include in your post
along with your typical WIAW day of eats:

-share your summer survival guide and/or summer goals-
-tell us about your favorite summer workouts to beat the heat-
-sneak in a few recipes for your favorite summer salads, smoothies, etc-
-update us on your veggie gardening, farmers markets and csa boxes-
-give us a rundown of what's in season now and how you plan on eating it!-
-come up with a fun summer playlist to amp up your run/workout-
-talk about your favorite summer eats + what fruits and veggies you can't get enough of right now-
Have fun, be healthy, and get creative!
I can't wait to see what you crazy kids come up with =)

  1. Great idea! I'll look forward to reading everyone's ideas because in the summer I do NOT want to eat solid food. The heat just makes me feel awful. I need to get creative!

I love this!  Eating seasonally is a great money saver, and it helps support local farmers.  Not to mention that it just flat out tastes better. :)

  5. YAY! After taking a few months off from blogging, I'm so excited to be back and am ready to jump on the WIAW bandwagon again!
Summer is my favorite season, by far, so this theme is sooo exciting. Fresh fruit, veggies, and smoothies have taken over my life...and I wouldn't have it any other way. (:

  6. Here in New York, the big summer bargain is lobster ($3.49/lb this weekend!) and the corn has been just amazing.  So I took last night's lobster shells and a bunch of corn cobs from corn salad I made and boiled them together to make a stock for a lobster and corn gumbo (the corn flavor is actually stronger than the lobster, but you can taste both).  I'm planning to add lots of tomatoes, okra, more corn and "the trinity" and just a small amount of lobster meat and sausage.  Does that sound summery or what?  And pretty healthy too.

  7. Love it! Our veggie garden finally bloomed and I've got zukes coming out my ears! Suggestion for a future challenge: water intake! I'm terrible at getting my 8-10 glasses in...but maybe if I had a little extra incentive I would ;)

  11. Woo hoo! I was just wondering what the new theme would be! And funny you mention salads...because for the last two days I've been enjoying the same MASSIVE salad full of greens, beans, and tofu and I still can't get enough! And of course I'm eating summer fruit like it's my job! ;)
