Tackling the Living Room

I may be missing a coffee table, end table, and floor lamp... but I'm still making major progress with my living room.  Which is fabulous because the rest of the house is still bare!  I don't care though -- as long as my kitchen and living room have a little flair then the rest will follow.  Eventually.  Maybe.  Whatever, my living room is freaking fun!  We lightened up our formal mad-men style sofa by giving the room a modern spin with pops of color.  Once I finish my paintings there will be much more color, but for now the teeny little splash of aqua and red will hold up the fort.

A few small touches and my once-empty living room is starting to look like home!

Did you know IKEA has a mini design center in their stores?  We were able to hop on a computer and design our own entertainment center from the ground up.  It was unbelievably easy and we were able to customize every detail to fit our needs -- some open storage, some hidden, lots of lacquer, and a sleek, geometric design.  Holy cow I could kiss it. The facade looks super similar to CB2's new lacquer furniture line but for a fraction of the cost.  Like a sliver of the cost.

Our control freakishness in action

This is what happens when a pilot and an artist/nutritionist design furniture =)

and when the pilot goes out of town the fun REALLY starts!

My DIY Tripod Lamp looks finally has a home of it's own now!  The red and blue accents warm up it's industrial vibe along with my flowery painting and ruffled vase.  As for the birds?  They're actually functional!  The red canaries are candle holders and the glossy white owl is a vase.  I'm thinking adding some bamboo or fresh flowers?

and, as a happy accident, my latest literary obsession matches my decor.
It was meant to be =)

"I'm nerdy and I know it!"

eeee! can't wait to add more to these shelves!

What color scheme are you loving lately?  I'm starting to think I have an addiction to color.  I want all of them.. like literally ALL OF THEM in my house.  But that might get a  little crazy eh? =)

Aw, I love the red and aqua theme!! It looks great, Jenn! I have BARELY even attempted to decorate with an actual color scheme, since when we moved to the beach house we lost a lot of space and storage, lol. The sacrifices I make to be able to see the ocean outside my window every day!! ;-)

Jenn @ Peas and Crayons said...

bahaha oh gosh - that must be soooo hard ;) I'm so happy for you guys! storage schmorage -- you have a view! and the beach! <3 live it up girl!

Turquoise and light brown are my new favorite colors, but I have absolutely no spot in this house for them - and I am beyond repainting anything! Hopefully when we get to our next house (someday!) I'll get to use this color combo. I wish we had an IKEA nearby. That looks so fun!

I love grey for some reason. I think you should come decorate my place. You're just the complete package aren't you - food extraordinaire AND decorator. I think I gave up on the decorating side a looooong time ago lol

Our living rooms are like complete opposites and yet I'm obsessed and in love with yours! I feel like I could never pull off the modern vibe thing, but I LOVE it in other people's houses.

Jules @ La Petite Maison Verte said...

Looking GOOD!  I really like that color scheme and the entertainment center is so contemporary and sleek!  Also, I picked up some of that Mrs. Renfro's green salsa that you talk about from time to time.  That stuff is tasty but HOT!  I like it!

Jenn @ Peas and Crayons said...

whoohoooo!!!!! glad you like it! =) It is hotter than hot but flavors food SO WELL! its good on everything! Sometimes I mix it into plain greek yogurt to make a dip that isn't quite so flaming hot =) though when you have a cold or flu -- def eat it straight up! it clears congestion and stuffed noses like a champ!

Jamillah said...

OMG! Hunger Games!!!!!!! Also you're color scheme is super duper cute! Right now I'm really loving orange and blue in the home for some reason. The entertainment center is like super epic, how does the hubs like your red and aqua color situation?

Wow I love this! Great choices of color and Mad-Men-esque furniture. Can't go wrong there. Maybe ask Jon Hamm to visit and have him tell you what he thinks...just be sure to call me first so I can be there :-)

I love your sense of style!  I tend to stick to browns and greens with little pops of color here & there.

Maria @ Sinfully Nutritious said...

You can see the artist through your style. I wish I had some talent in designing!  Although, I do adore my IKEA kitchen. With IKEA, it is had not to mess up.  Everything goes!  For the stylish impaired, like me, IKEA is a dream come true.
Most of my home is IKEA a midst a "beach" theme.  In our bread delivery business, we don't get more than a few 1 night vacations, so I want my home to feel like a vacation, especially since I work at home.  It has changed my life!

My style is all beach, shells and water colors. "Calgon, take me away!"...anyone old enough to remember that?

I love it.  I think it is so much fun that you designed the entertainment center - great that it was a deal.  I am pretty minimal too when it comes to style but I love pops of color. I want that owl.

Jenn @ Peas and Crayons said...

Thank you!!! bahahaha and I REMEMBER THAT! I used to use calgon body splash as a kid! Loved the Hawaiian scented one =) A beachy themed house sounds perfect! relaxing and beautiful =) My friends south florida house is like that and I'm addicted to how awesome it is!!! <3

I was convinced I couldn't go as modern as we've been going lately but I keep finding ways to warm it up so its cozy and still feels welcome and lived-in -- but I'm the same way- I see other styles of decor and wish I could do that too! I wanna see yours!!

We had to pencil the IKEA run into our xmas reunion with the fam since we don't have one nearby either! Life without IKEA isn't my fav but at least it keeps us from spending all our money there eh? =) I love turquoise and brown too -- hope you find a way to sneak it in!!

Loving the red and aqua!

Hannah said...

I love those colors together!  I've been loving grey and yellow together but have yet to apply it to a room.  I'll get to it...eventually.

Sloane @ My Life in Florida said...

The working of that sentence was a little off :) And actually my house has all beige walls (We rent out house in Florida) and very few pictures on the walls... Very Plain! I am working on it though. I have lots of ideas saved from Pinterest :)

Jenn @ Peas and Crayons said...

our FL rental was like that too! We slacked and left the walls bare for a year -- don't be like us! Hang frames and art galore!! =)

I'm loving the red & aqua combo!  Your living room is really coming along!  I love splashes of colour too and I really do feel that they enhance our moods.  At the moment, I'm trying to encourage my in-laws to add some splashes of red or aqua to their 'neutral' lounge. When I walk in their lounge, I feel like all the colour has been sucked out of it and it's not a good vibe! I'm sure colour enhances our moods (it does for me anyhow!).

Jenn @ Peas and Crayons said...

Ohmygosh it SO does! I took color a psychology class back in college and it is so so interesting how different colors can affect our moods!!! Football teams used to paint the away team's locker room baby pastel pink to psych them out and it worked!!!! also vibrant and bright red, orange + yellow can make us more energetic, happy, hungry, and also eat more!!! Hope they let you add a splash of color to amp up the vibe/mood of their lounge!

OMG---- I have that exact same owl vase!!!!!!  I knew I loved you for a reason (or 50 million).

Jenn @ Peas and Crayons said...

bahaha isn't it so flipping cute!? What did you put in yours? Fresh flowers? Fake? I was thinking of bamboo maybe!

Jules @ La Petite Maison Verte said...

I'll definitely have to try the greek yogurt dip idea, thanks for the tip!

Amanda D said...

Fresh when I have them. This was a good month for the owl b/c B got me flowers for my bday & again for vday. :)
I like the idea of bamboo in it too, that would look nice!
