Kid-Friendly Fruit and Veggie Eater Meter

I may be biased =)  but I feel like fruits and veggies are the most important foods we can eat!  It may be trendy to obsesses over superfoods and the next big nutrient powerhouse but, when it comes down to it,  plain old fruits and veggies are always there for us!  Whether they are waiting for us in grocery store produce aisles or arranged beautifully in farmer's market stands, they're gloriously accessible.  We can even find them in the frozen foods aisle or chillaxing in jars and cans.  They're cheap, easy, and absolutely delicious.

Back when I was working as a nutrition counselor at WIC, this was my go-to tool for helping moms not only teach their kids about fruits and veggies but to get them to eat them too. How I went almost 2 years of blogging without ever sharing my colorful little secret I'll never know.  But I'm sharing it now, so pass this along to any moms, nutrition students, dietitians, or teachers that you know b/c this little handout by the Fruits and Veggies: More Matters campaign is worth its weight in gold.  Well its paper... so its worth way more than its weight in gold!  Maybe an elephant's weight? =)  Enjoy! <3

fruit and veggie eater meter tracker printout challenge

At the end of the fruit and veggie challenge there is a cutesy little certificate and you can even include a prize!   I love this printout so fur-eaking much!  My clients always adored starting this challenge at home with their kiddos and I hope you guys love it too <3

This is so cute, Jenn!  If my printer was working I'd print it out and annoy Ralph with it.  When I get a new printer, I WILL do that!!

This is awesome!  My daughter is only 16 months, but I think I could start something like this with her soon.  What a splendid idea.  My favorite fruit and veggies change with the season, BUT, if I could get Flathead Cherries and tomatoes (I know, technically a fruit) locally year round, those would be my top picks!

Jenn @ Peas and Crayons said...

Hey Maggie! So glad you love it!!! =) And if I could get local tomatoes and cherries year round i'd be a happy camper too <3 ahh soooo good! I miss tomatoes so much right now!

SO CUTE!!  Love it :)

very cute idea. I work so hard to get my kiddos to eat more veggies. In the summer it is easy..they like to pick things right from the garden and eat them right away. In the winter=much harder..maybe we will try this.

What a great tool!
My fave produce item is definitely the avocado---which I suppose is technically a fruit, but it really doesn't feel like one.

So cute!  We had a similar handout at our school that we sent home with our younger students.  I did fresh fruit and veggie tasting "parties" every Friday in my first grade class...it's amazing how kids who "don't like anything" will happily eat raw produce when it's happening in class with a bunch of their friends!

our children love fruits and veggies, both in smoothies and on their plates.   this is great because sometimes we get in a rut of buying the same ones over and over.  my favorite fruit is blueberries,  and the favorite veggie is squash.

We have no problem getting our daughter to eat lots of fruits and veggies (and smoothies), but I still love this chart!  What a fun way for kids to get involves!  Thanks for sharing!

...you don't have to be a kid to get the certificate, do you? ;)

This is adorable!  My nephew (2 years old) has sensory issues and has a "few" select foods that he will actually eat. I'm going to give this to my sister to see if it helps!  Thanks!

Jenn @ Peas and Crayons said...

I'll be sure to put a gold star on your certificate =)

Jenn @ Peas and Crayons said...

I hope to say that about my future kiddos too! =) High-five to you!!!!! <3

whooo! go you for having fabulous eaters! <3 do you do seasonal F/V with them or just rotate a few year round? regardless - you rock!

My favourite veggie, if I’m ‘cheating’ and considering starches veggies,
it would be yams/sweet potatoes but in true vegetables it would probably be
mushrooms. It’s a bit like asking me to choose my favourite kid though! Haha

For fruit probably my favourite is raspberries. Mmm…fresh, sweet
raspberries! I love mangoes and pineapple too, just because I grew up on them
back home.

I love these charts! So cute and such a good idea – I’d use them as an
adult, haha!

You and your posts are so stinkin' cute! That job sounds like oh-so-much fun. I'd have to say my favorite veggie is kale, and favorite fruit is mac apples or mangos. Basically, anything that starts with an 'm' :-)

I LOVE your energy.  I can tell that you are such an energetic person just from your writing.  What an amazing tool this is!  I bet it could get some kiddos to at least try a few fruits and veggies that they normally wouldn't want to eat.

My fave fruit is an apple and my fave veggie is carrots!  YUM!!!

Jenny@HealthyMOchick said...

I'm going to try this with my daughter!  She's great about trying fruit but not so much with the veggies.  I'm willing to try anything. :)  My Fav veggie is green beans and fruit is a peach

Alicia said...

Oh this is so awesome!! I agree it sounds like so much fun. My favorite veggie is a toss up between green beans or asparagus. Fruit is a toss up between strawberries or mangos.

What a great chart for kids to teach them about great nutrition.  My little ones love to track their progress on "projects."  I love the certificate at the end, too.

I agree - fruits and veg are the most important. That thing is so cute!

Toni @ Not Yet A Mommy Blog said...

This is so cute! I totally agree that fruits and veggies are important, and I would really like to be able to one day pass that knowledge on to my kids in a fun way like this. Right now I'm obsessed with grapefruit and zucchini, but I change my favorite fruits and veggies pretty often. Berries, I find, are the easiest to incorporate into a diet because you can just sprinkle them on cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, salad, or even desserts like ice cream or pie. yum!!

Jenn @ Peas and Crayons said...

Ohmygosh I totally am with ya on the berries! I find AWESOME ones when they're in season and until then I have bags and bags of frozen ones on hand =) so good! Happy Wednesday Toni! xoox
