The title suggests I'm making calculated moves to structure the "bones" of my kitchen before running wild with my artsy fartsy decor dreams. In reality, I'm procrastinating on committing to my new accent colors [your suggestions in this post helped mucho!] and layering more neutrals instead. Tis true. But I came up with some fantabulous solutions!
Step 1: Reclaiming Counter Space
In our last house we kept our paper towels on a little holder next to the sink. And by "next to the sink" I mean... in the living room, on top of the fridge, on the coffee table and occasionally the stupid thing would wind up on the floor. When we moved, I marched my butt into Bed Bath and Beyond and bought this:
Best. Decision. Ever! I was entirely too nervous to screw it directly into the bottom of my cabinet, so I nixed the screws altogether and grabbed a pair of sticky-yet-removable command strips instead. They have held up gloriously these past few months. So not only is it super convenient, but also rental-friendly!
Step 2: Cleaning up after a Clumsy Chef
There's really no explanation needed for this one. I drop things. All. The. Time. These Crate and Barrel runners make a perfect catch-all for my workspace. So far they've survived a flour explosion, pesto splatters, and a few dropped dirty dishes.
Step 3: Stash and Store
I still totally have a junk drawer, but here are a few of the drawers that aren't a hot mess.
And since we're on the subject of kitchen details,
I'm always happy to give up a teeny bit of counter space for my arsenal of kitchen tools:
Maybe some art will help?
Here are a few decor ideas I've come up with recently!
Let me know what you think! <3

Can I please live in your house? I'm a very clean house guest :)
Your kitchen is so beautiful and minimalist. I adore it. Great job!
that is the hawtness. I live in Brooklyn so my kitchen is 1/4 that size. I'm jealous
GEEZ! SO very jealous of your kitchen...the design, the functionality. Now the organization! Love it.
Those plates are absolutely adorable! Where did you get them? LOVE!
You could try using double sided tape on the runners. That might help.
I love that paper towel idea-- our rolls are always just sitting out on our counter. We're classy like that ;-)
Your painting kind of looks like the mouth of a giant space worm about to devour your kitchen. The fact that this is a good thing in my world tells you something about me. Ha! I love your kitchen. It's pretty and airy and serene.
What a fun kitchen! I am going to get a paper towel holder like the one you've got here--I am so sick of that thing sitting on the counter!
These pics are fab! What a sweet kitchen :)
Don't forget the bed bath and beyond coupon too! =) hehe! Its a fabulous purchase and totally made my life easier!!! <3 Its amazing how 10 bucks can fix a kitchen problem for life!
hehe trust me this will change your kitchen =) hehe I was getting in the habit of chucking the lone roll at my husband when he would leave his dishes on the couch =) Now its anchored and out of the way <3
Wow, I am so jealous! I live in a one-bedroom apartment with a half-kitchen-half-dining-room combo with zero space. It looks great!
bahahaha!
CB2! <3
You need some red or a wine color in there for some pop :) It would look awesome with all that black/grey/white. P.S. May I steal you kitchen por favor?
don't be jealous!!! come visit! =) I'll cook for you! hehe
Ok but no actual red wine b/c i'll spill it on those rugs! hahaha! Steal away! =)
I've gone through sooo many teeny (oh gosh.. and ugly!) kitchens before this one... so your dream kitchen is in your future! <3 promise =)
come on over!
LOVE your kitchen. I love the play on grey and red. Totally jealous! ;)
It looks great and I LOVE LOVE LOVE those runners (kind of a shame about the corners).
your kitchen is beautiful! i can't wait to see what accent color you choose! i'm loving the lime green in the container next to your utensils.
Yes you definitely should add a rug pad. Get a nice squishy one and then take a needle and thread and sew the corners to the pad. Just a stitch or two. Then you can easily cut the stitch if you need to throw the rug in the washer. I had to do that with my doormat. Just my idea.
Love the kitchen, but yes - throw some colorful art in!
I <3 my paper towel holder, too! Your kitchen looks beautiful and organized. Way to go!
I am a little bit in love with your kitchen.
Love your kitchen! And yep, I agree with the others - I am all for colourful art.
Ah I miss decorating my new kitchen, so fun :)
Your kitchen is gorgeous! :) You have done such a good job.
I need that paper towel holder. Like you previously, I lose my paper towel roll all the time!
Your kitchen is BEAUTIFUL! I've never seen such neat and organized drawers/cabinets in my life! haha
Oh my goodness your kitchen is STUNNING! Like my dream kitchen!
[Groan] Compared to your kitchen, mine is trashy. UGH! Yours is so nice and organized...that is my dream. I *love* it. That reminds me, we need to get a paper towel holder thingy!
You are so organized! I need a change in my house. Can I hire you?!

Thanks Lexi! =) They're from CB2
I'm sure it is!!!! =) switching things up a teeny bit with extra organization works magic =) truuust me!
I totally LOVE LOVE LOVE your kitchen. I am such a huge fan of the palette of gray, white and black (it's in my living room right now) because then you can swap out accent colors to change the look so easily. Red is my favorite color in the world so I use that a lot against the neutrals.
I am sooooo jealous of your kitchen. I have NO coutner space anymore and my boys can reach EVERYTHING! Ugh. Can I please come over and have a kitchen date? :)
I was about to ask the same question. Beautiful kitchen.
I seriously love your kitchen, and the colors are so pretty!
I am a fan of your black and white base with color pops. MY STYLE EXACTLY -- wait till you see my dorm room pics!
What a great idea with the command adhesive strips! I really need to organise my kitchen a bit better. The state of my drawers is getting worse and worse. You'e given me some great ideas. Thanks!
Come on over! Bring the boys! <3
Next time I am at a BB & B -I am going to pick up one of those under the counter paper towel holders. -Good to know command strips hold it in place even after being tugged on all day long :-)
You'll LOVE it! =) Makes life super easy! and I am still shocked over how well these command strips are holding! Its been a few months now and it even holds when my husband abuses it -- so totally durable! <3
xoxo
Can you please tell me about those fabulous white coffee cups and spoons and saucers in your K-Cup storage drawers?? Thanks
bahaha! the bowls are Libby brand from Bed Bath and Beyond and the spoons are from crate and barrel! <3 MWAH!
What is your kitchen paint color? Beautiful!
Its a Glidden Hue called Veil Grey! Its stinky [I tend to hunt down the 0 VOC paints when possible] but its GORGEOUS! I love it so so much! <3
Thanks for stopping by! <3 Hope you have a rockin' weekend!
xoxo
Jenn
I think the "green apple" would look great!! Beautiful kitchen!
Thansk Becky!!! I have been taking baby steps towards the green =) love it so! Hope you're having a great weekend!!
Love the yellow, grey and black
I am redoing my kitchen. I like the black, yellow and white. Where did you find the clear tall jars? And the black, white and yellow accessories? I like your green also, but am in to the other three colors now!
Hey Jill! The jars are from Crate and Barrel and TJMaxx/Homegoods and all the black white and yellow accents were from target.com! Hope that helps!!! <3
Hmmm, I'm drawn to the green and black but I'm loving the gray, yellows and blacks this year as well. Oh, that was no help at all was it?
Love the striped rugs!! Where are they from?
Thanks Jessica! Crate & Barrel =)
